What is happening
The capture of Goma and fighting across the Kivus displaced hundreds of thousands within weeks, on top of one of the world's longest-running displacement emergencies.
Between 21 and 25 million people are estimated to need assistance, with cholera and measles spreading through overcrowded sites.
What we don't think about
Camps that burned twice
Families who fled to camps around Goma were displaced again when the fighting reached them, losing the little they had rebuilt.
Disease in the crowd
Cholera moves fastest where thousands share a handful of latrines. Sanitation is the difference between a displacement site and an outbreak.
Survivors with nowhere to report
Sexual violence is used systematically, and services for survivors are among the first to lose funding.
