What is happening
Since April 2023 a power struggle between two generals has emptied entire cities. Khartoum, El Fasher and swathes of Darfur have seen shelling of residential blocks, markets and hospitals.
Around 30.4 million people — more than half the country — need humanitarian assistance, and famine has been confirmed in displacement camps while aid convoys are blocked or looted.
What we don't think about
Famine inside the camps
Famine was confirmed in Zamzam camp — a place people had fled to for safety. Families sell tools, then clothes, then their last goat, and still cannot buy a sack of sorghum.
Women walking for water
With pumps destroyed, women and girls walk hours through checkpoints for water, where the risk of assault is highest. Safety and a working borehole are the same problem.
A generation off the school register
Millions of children have now missed three consecutive school years. Where schools survive, they are shelters for displaced families instead of classrooms.
