What is happening

19.5 million people need assistance — 1.3 million more than the year before. Around 17.1 million people are food insecure.

Public salaries have gone unpaid for years, so even where markets have food, families cannot buy it.

What we don't think about

Debt as a coping strategy

Most households survive on credit from local shopkeepers who are themselves running out. When that credit stops, meals stop.

Landmines in the fields

Contaminated farmland means families choose between farming and safety, and children lose limbs on the way to fetch water.

Health workers unpaid

Clinics stay open because staff volunteer. Every funding cut removes another midwife from a district.
